Looking for quiet South West Algarve beaches during summer? While some of the Algarve’s most popular beaches become crowded in July and August, there are still several places where you can enjoy a relaxed beach day. Whether you’re staying in Lagos, Portimão or Ferragudo, these South West Algarve beaches offer beautiful scenery, easy access and plenty of space even during high season.
One common issue on the Algarve from late June to mid-September is the crowds and limited parking at the most popular beaches. This is especially true in central areas, where many visitors don’t have a rental car and rely on nearby beaches.
But as long as you know where to go, the South West Algarve offers plenty of beaches where even on a Sunday afternoon you can enjoy a relaxed stay—nothing like the crowded scenes you might see on Italian beaches or Mallorca in high season. Here are our top tips for beaches that remain surprisingly relaxed, even at the height of summer.
🏖 Meia Praia, Lagos
Just next to Lagos yet never feeling overcrowded due to its impressive length, Meia Praia is one of the best beaches near Lagos for visitors looking for space even during high season. With its dunes, fine sand and easy access to the sea, it is particularly popular with families and anyone looking for a relaxed beach day in the Algarve.
Several parking options are available; if one is full, just drive a little further along the beach. At the main access points, you’ll find bars and restaurants, as well as the option to rent sunbeds and umbrellas. Highlights include Pirata Beach Bar and Bar Quim, both at the far end of the beach, perfect for simple snacks with your feet in the sand (see map).
If you’re not arriving by car, these are the alternatives: the seasonal Vai e Vem ferry service, the pedestrian bridge at the marina, the local bus, or the small tourist train that runs through the town.
Lagos is also one of the best bases for exploring the western Algarve — my Lagos travel guide covers the best things to do, places to eat and practical tips for your stay.

🏖 Praia do Amado
Completely different in character from the beaches along the south coast, Praia do Amado perfectly showcases the wild, natural and breathtaking beauty of the Algarve’s west coast. Located in the heart of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, this stunning west coast beach is still easily reachable — just about 45 minutes by car from Lagos.
While there are several other excellent beaches nearby, many of them suffer from limited parking in summer and require driving on unpaved roads. At Praia do Amado, this is rarely an issue: the wide beach almost always offers plenty of space, making it one of the more relaxed beaches in the Algarve even during high season. Just a few minutes away, the restaurant Sítio do Forno is well worth a visit, offering stunning views and an excellent cataplana.
Praia do Amado is also one of the best-known surf beaches in the Algarve, attracting both beginners and experienced surfers throughout the year.
Tip: Check the tide times before visiting — at high tide, the usable beach area on the west coast can be significantly reduced.

🏖 Praia do Zavial
Praia do Zavial is an easy and relaxed beach to visit, with very good parking and straightforward access all the way down to the sand. Directly at the beach you’ll find Restaurante Zavial, a popular spot for lunch or a drink with a view. During the main season, the restaurant also rents out deck chairs and umbrellas on a small, concessioned section of the beach for those who prefer a bit more comfort.
At low tide, the water is shallow and warms up nicely, as the beach extends into a river delta. Thanks to the wide stretch of sand and the generous amount of space, Praia do Zavial rarely feels crowded, even in summer.
The final part of the access road is narrow, though paved and perfectly manageable. It’s important to approach the beach via Raposeira and not take an earlier turn off the N125, which often leads to rough or unsuitable roads.
Tip: If you have some time on your way back, a stop at FAVO Bistro Bar in Raposeira is highly recommended. This lovely community café and restaurant is a local favourite and occasionally hosts small markets and events, making it a nice way to round off your beach day.

🏖 Praia Grande, Ferragudo
Praia Grande is a well-known and centrally located family-friendly beach near Ferragudoo. As the name suggests, it is a wide, sandy beach with beautiful views across the river mouth of the Rio Arade towards Portimão.
What makes Praia Grande particularly special is not only its scenic setting, but also the generally calmer sea conditions. Thanks to the offshore breakwaters, the water is often much more sheltered here and remains relatively shallow. As a result, the water tends to be noticeably warmer than the other mentioned beaches in this article. This makes Praia Grande especially suitable for families with younger children, for relaxed paddling, or for longer, comfortable swims. For visitors staying in Ferragudo or Portimão, it is one of the easiest beaches to reach without sacrificing a relaxed beach atmosphere.
A big highlight for families is the playground located directly on the beach, allowing children to play while staying close to the water. For everyone else, the beach offers several restaurants and bars right on the sand. Three are located directly at Praia Grande, with Escondidinho standing out as a place where you can enjoy a cocktail literally with your feet in the sand.
Parking is generally easy, although you will need to walk a short distance from the car to the beach. This small walk is usually well worth it, as parking is almost always available. It is not recommended to drive all the way to the very front of the beach access, as turning space is extremely limited and only a few parking spots are available there.
Tip: The beach club Nau regularly hosts live music and is a very popular spot, especially in the late afternoon and early evening.

🏖 Praia das Cabanas Velhas
Located between the villages of Burgau and Salema, Praia das Cabanas Velhas is a great alternative to the more central village beaches and one of the quieter beaches near Burgau. It usually offers plenty of space even during high season — including comparatively easy parking. Depending on the tide, the beach can become narrower at high water, so it’s worth checking the tide tables in advance if you plan to spend the whole day here.
Traditionally, there has been a small and charming beach restaurant operating during the season, though there appears to be a change of ownership at the moment, so it’s best to check current availability beforehand. The beach often offers suitable conditions for surfing when the swell is right.
Tip: From Cabanas Velhas, you can walk a short section of the Fishermen’s Trail (start here) along the cliffs, with beautiful coastal views back towards Burgau. During high season, make sure to wear a hat and bring sufficient water — even for short walks, the sun can be intense and there is very little shade along the trail.

☀ Final Tips for a Relaxed Beach Day
Most beaches along this stretch of coast offer little to no natural shade, and it’s strongly advised not to sit directly underneath the cliffs, as rockfall can occur and it does, trust me, we already saw it happening! If you’re planning to stay at the beach for more than an hour, it’s well worth coming prepared with some Algarve beach essentials.
What to bring for a comfortable beach day:
A sun umbrella or, even better on windy days, a beach tent
A small cooler box with plenty of water and some snacks
High-protection sunscreen
Any beach or water equipment you plan to use, such as a board, wetsuit, or snorkelling gear
Beach toys or games (for example buckets and spades, a frisbee or beach volleyball)
✈️ Travelling by plane?
Instead of buying bulky items you may end up discarding afterwards, consider renting beach equipment locally in Lagos. This is a practical and more sustainable option, especially for umbrellas, beach tents or cooler boxes during your Algarve holiday.
